South Boston is gearing up for a new luxurious mixed-use community, Washington Village. Located in Andrew Square, Washington Village will provide a trendy work, live, and play balance that is sure to please. Mixed-use facilities are the newest trend in real estate development. As we continue to observe lifestyle changes, we’re seeing more small family units, an increasing need for less time commuting to and from work, and even an increase in office camaraderie activities. These lifestyle changes across communities nationwide play a huge role in the recent mixed-use facility trends. The addition of Washington Village to South Boston, comes as no surprise.
Historically, this area was once home to an Irish Catholic working-class community since the Irish first migrated to the area due to a famine in Ireland. In recent years, the neighborhood has transformed and now attracts a diverse group of people due to its public transportation access and proximity to downtown. Today, the neighborhood is most commonly known as Southie. Its latest addition, Washington Village, will fit in perfectly with local residents, young professionals, and families.
Washington Village is planned to include 656 residential units consisting of condos and rentals. These housing units will include floor plans ranging from studio to three bedrooms. 110 of those housing units will be affordable housing units for middle-class families. In addition, Washington Village will also include a grocery store, cafes, a pharmacy, other retail stores and much more. The building will boast a total of 648 parking spaces above and below ground for residents and visitors, and a whopping 45,000 square feet of outdoor space for get-togethers, picnics, meetings, and more. The entire complex will consist of eight buildings and the tallest building will reach as much as 22 stories high.
The planning for such a large endeavor comes at the heels of the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s new endeavor along Dorchester Avenue. Nestled among Dorchester Street, Old Colony Avenue, and Dorchester Avenue, Washington Village will add to an already perfect mix of restaurants, shops, and public transportation.
Washington Village will bring in a large influx of new residents and visitors to the South Boston Neighborhood. The addition of affordable and luxury condominiums will attract a diverse mix of like-minded individuals. Washington Village will support a community of shopping, dining, working, and living which will bring a refreshing aesthetic to an area that has been almost forgotten.
In an excerpt from their Facebook page, Washington Village reveals their hope to promote a spirit of community...
“We are a transformative community in the heart of South Boston. Our vision includes a central meeting place with a range of programming, where longtime area residents and new residents alike can meet for coffee, buy fresh produce at a farmers market, ice skate, attend a car show or an art show. Join us as we create a modern village where neighbors are genuinely connected to each other.”
Construction on Washington Village is set to conclude in 2021 and we are looking forward to seeing the completed project.
